Instrument Sales
I am always being asked for advice on buying new instruments. My advise is almost always the same.
- Buy the best you can afford. This does not mean spend lots. Just that you get quality for what you do spend.
- Buy appropriate instruments for the player. A beginner probably does not need a 5 grand saxophone.
- Do not be taken in by anyone who tells you “this is an exact copy of” (never been true yet)
- If you are not offered a choice, then you may well be being pushed onto the best deal for the retailer not you.
- Be very cautious of buying direct from web sites. If it is not a big company that you recognise. Be careful.
- Always double check that the instrument will be set up prior to you taking delivery. It’s very rare that they come out of the factory 100% at their best. It is very common for buyers to save £50 on the price of a new instrument to then be faced with a very large service cost to get it to work correctly.
- Only ever buy from people in the music business. Not from general warehouse stocks. These instruments will rarely have been checked or tested.
- I am more and more often completing repair work on instruments that is costing more than the original cost of the instrument. This is due to poor build quality and Internet sellers taking advantage of people trying to get the best deal.
- I am having to be honest with some customers and telling them that the instrument they have brought is not, economically, repairable. No matter how cheap an instrument costs to buy! The service costs are the same. Cheap, mass produced instruments tend to need more looking after due to the quality of build.
- A £100 instrument that lasts 6 months is not a bargain.
So when I was recently approached by one of the retailers that I do recommend and trust, and asked if I would be their agent here in Devon/Cornwall, I agreed to do this. This was the person who I had trained under for wood wind repair. They could see that there was not a retailer working in my area that could offer a selection of quality instruments. This is understandable as the cost of this kind of set up is huge. By having myself as an agent. Local musicians have somewhere local to buy, have set up and maintain these new quality instruments. I will not have a huge stock at my workshop. But will have the instruments delivered to me, inspected and set up prior to you collecting them. I will then be on hand for any settling in issues. Saving you money in postage, inconvenience of losing your instrument for possibly weeks and endless phone calls to get some one to give you the service you would expect.
Listed below is what I can offer that a faceless suppler may not.
- A real person that you can pop in and talk to
- I am the only person locally offering a range of quality instruments.
- You will never hear me say. “This is an exact copy” of a big named instrument. I have never once tested an instrument that comes close to that description. If this statement was true then there would not be a difference of several thousand pounds between the two instruments. Common sense says this is not right. If it seems to good to be true it probably is.
- I can source as an agent almost every make of instrument on the U.K market.
- Every instrument sold will be inspected and set up by me.
- As I am local! Any further adjustments required can be done easily and quickly. No need to send instrument back to supplier.
- Manufacturers guarantees will be dealt as standard
- My prices are on par with other quality suppliers.
- I can offer a full range from student to pro on most makes.
